Deaf Bible Video Update
September 2020
Here's what a South Sudan sign language video looks like.
(If you don't hear any audio, that's how it's supposed to sound.)

Deaf Milestone: First Chronological Bible video uploaded!

During the months since COVID-19 started, much of my (Eric's) software development time has been spent enabling the Digital Bible Library (DBL) to be able to handle sign language video that is structured as a chronological Bible. This involved making sure the DBL uploader tool (aka Nathanael) can import, convert files and fully describe the sign-language video metadata.

Praise God that the first chronological video Bibles have been uploaded to the DBL for sign-language speakers in the following countries: Philippines, Mozambique, Nigeria, and South Sudan. Please pray that this video content will be used to help the Deaf in these countries to be transformed by God's Word and will for their lives!
Here's what the file structure looks like for one chronological Bible. Each thematic publication "track" is divided into story units. A story unit is a Bible message told through a key biblical story (e.g. God's Creation, God Made Man and Woman, etc). Each story unit has up to 5 videos: Topic (title), Introduction, Story (Bible passages), More Info (Background), Dialogue (Discussion).
What's Next?

Since these uploads can be several gigabytes (up to 900GB) per video Bible, it's now important for me to make Digital Bible Library smarter when storing these files to reduce the amount of duplication that happens each time a video Bible has content added to it. This should also help make the upload process quicker. I would also like to make some better checks that can help identify issues like missing content or metadata before it gets uploaded to the DBL.
🙏🏽 Please continue to pray
  • For health for our family
  • For energy and wisdom for each day
  • For financial provision and for wisdom in seeking new financial partners in the current circumstances. (It is a huge praise that giving toward our Wycliffe ministry has increased overall in the past year!)

Family Update

Eric has enjoyed a little better average sleep (7.5hrs/night) over the past two months but went ahead and made an appointment with a neurologist for minor but persistent tingling, especially in his fingers and lips. Please pray that the scheduled brain and spine MRI will help figure out what's going on (and not be serious).

Allison turned 37 in September. Woohoo! She has been busy teaching Sarah, who is doing virtual learning, and has had the opportunity to substitute teach for a couple of ballet classes. The classes are small, and the studio is taking a lot of precautions, so dance has been the main social activity for her and the kids this year. She's still battling chronic hives and trying to identify stressors and other potential underlying issues. Fortunately, she is mostly able to keep things under control with diet and supplements right now.

Caleb (middle) turned 5 in August. He is often lost in his own world play-acting out his imagination. Even though he's ahead in his ability to read, we decided to keep him home for another year before starting school to give him time to develop his ability to sit still and pay attention. Sarah (7) is doing second grade from home again and is doing well. We're happy that Jonah (3) can often play well with either sibling and is doing well in his potty training.
